Hand-assist
devices have been developed to aid in the performance of advanced
laparoscopic procedures, and early results are described in recent
literature. We have had extensive experience with hand-assist devices both
in the form of early prototype models and those hand-assist devices
currently on the market. Important principles of hand-assist devices
include ease of use, reliable maintenance of pneumoperitoneum, and hand
comfort. In cooperation with industry we have helped to develop a new
hand-assist device which appears to meet all these important principles
(HandPortTM, Smith & Nephew Endoscopy, Andover, MA).
The
UMASS EndoSurgery Center has been actively pursuing a research and
development program to design new instruments and novel
technologies in minimally invasive surgery. With the help of
our on-site engineers with state of the art CAD workstations we
have patented numerous new devices. Most that information is
proprietary, as these devices are in the pre-production
phase. The HandPortTM
system represents the first product that was the result of
our research. Don't forget to look up the presentations
about hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery in the Courses
section as well as the videoclips in the Procedures
